Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Amsler grid Performing Amsler grid tests may let you find changes in your vision that you would not notice otherwise. An Amsler grid looks like a chess board with a black dot in the center and it works by revealing any blurry or wavy spots caused by AMD. When using the grid, the patient should:1) Wear reading glasses and hold the grid 12-15 inches away from the face in good lighting. 2) Cover one eye. 3) Look directly at the center dot and note whether all lines of the grid are straight or if they look distorted, blurred or dark. 4) Repeat the procedure in the other eye. 5) Contact an ophthalmologist if any area of the grid looks wavy, blurred or dark.
