Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Types of macular degeneration The two most common types of AMD are "dry" (atrophic) and "wet" (exudative): Dry Macular Degeneration (atrophic)Nine out of 10 people who have AMD have the dry form, which results in thinning of the tissues of the macula. Dry AMD takes many years to develop, so vision loss is gradual. Wet Macular Degeneration (exudative)The wet form of AMD is less common (occurring in one out of 10 people with AMD), but is more serious since vision loss may rapid and severe. In the wet form of AMD, abnormal blood vessels start to grow in a layer beneath the retina, leaking fluid and blood and creating distortion. If not treated on time, these blood vessels start shrivelling and end up leaving scar tissue on the retina, which results in a large blind spot in the center of your vision.
