Cataracts How do you treat a cataract? There is no treatment for cataracts today except for close monitoring by an opthalmologist and periodic changes of the eyeglass prescription. Corrective glasses will work only up to a certain point, and on many patients, the prescription may change often as the cataract progresses. No medications, dietary supplements or exercises have been shown to prevent or cure cataracts. The only way to permanently improve the patient's vision is to remove the cataract through surgery. Cataracts do not necessarily need to be removed just because they are present. Likewise, it is not necessary to wait until they are very mature to be removed. Surgery should be considered when cataracts cause enough loss of vision to interfere with daily activities, like doing your job, driving safely, watching television, reading, doing housework or taking medication.
