Adult Eye Exams in Edison & Perth Amboy

Taking Care of Your Vision

Eye exams are an essential part of maintaining your vision and eye health. During your eye exam, we work closely with you to understand your unique needs and complete a comprehensive series of tests to give us the insights we need to care for you and your eyes.

For adults, eye exams center around maintaining visual clarity for your lifestyle, helping you find the perfect eyewear to suit your personality, and monitoring your eye health for any signs of eye disease.

How Do I Prepare For An Eye Test?

You don’t need to prepare anything special for a standard comprehensive eye exam. On the day of your appointment, we’ll walk you through the process step by step to ensure you have an informed and fulfilling experience.

What Is Included in a Full Eye Exam?

For a comprehensive eye exam, we complete a series of tests that let us see a full picture of your eye health. These tests include monitoring intraocular pressure to screen for glaucoma, visual acuity, refractive testing to check your lens prescription, and retinal imaging to determine the health of the back of your eye.

How Often Should Adults Get Their Eyes Checked?

The American Association of Optometrists recommends adults aged 18–64 schedule an eye exam at least every 2 years if they are low risk. At-risk patients should visit an optometrist at least once a year.

Do Eye Exams Include Glasses Prescriptions?

Many eye exams do! Suppose you have a refractive error like myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. We can recommend eyeglasses, sunglasses, or contact lenses to ensure you can see clearly in everything you do. You won’t need a prescription if we determine you don’t have a refractive error.

What Should You Not Do Before an Eye Exam?

Before visiting us for your eye exam, try not to strain your eyes. Whether that means putting screens away or ensuring you’ve had enough sleep, anything you can do to ensure your eyes are well-rested before your eye exam increases the chances of accurate test results.

Can an Eye Exam Detect Other Health Problems?

Your eye health can give us lots of insights into your overall health. We can detect eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration by looking comprehensively at your eyes. We may also be able to detect signs of high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, thyroid disorder, Parkinson’s disease, and more.

How Do You Know If Your Eyes Need Testing?

Blurry vision, increased eye strain, redness, motion sickness, holding books or newspapers further from your eyes to see clearly, dryness, itchiness, and flashes of light are all signs your eyes need testing.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Dr. Santamaria was very patient and comforting during the entire process. I was reassured multiple times that my eyes were healthy enough for LASIK. During the procedure, he and his assistant made sure I was comfortable and made the process painless. I have had no issues since the surgery and wouldn't think twice about recommending Dr. Santamaria!

Surgery was amazing. Colors are bright and vivid. Everything is sharp. White is white, not off-white. Could not see like this with glasses I have worn for 67 years. Thank you, Dr. Santamaria and God bless you.

My eyes were getting worse every year. Being a diabetic, I was even more afraid. Even with the new glasses, I couldn't see signs or drive-up menus. I decided: ``The heck with these vision center places. I'm going for a good check up to Dr. Santamaria``. I have Medicare now, but thought he was only a surgeon. Praise God - it was the best move I made. He and his wonderful staff diagnosed a cataract in each eye. Why wasn't it seen before? I went every year for a check up. I now see better than I EVER did. I don't need my glasses. Driving is wonderful. I can read the scores on TV - It's a whole new world. I am so happy and so grateful to Dr. Santamaria and his staff! On top of their expertise, his staff is pleasant, knowledgeable and will answer any questions and concerns! Thank you again.

For the first time in 71 years I am now able to see without glasses thanks to the doctors and staff of the Santamaria Eye Center. They explained every aspect of the operation step by step, and made sure I understood. I felt relaxed and confident. I had 2 operations and each time I received the same excellent care by the most skilled, efficient doctors and staff possible. I would recommend the Santamaria Eye Center to anyone wanting the best Eye Care by the best team of doctors and staff available today. Thank you.
