Retina Testing & Treatments in Edison & Perth Amboy

Taking Care of Retinal Conditions

Caring for your eye health is our priority. The retina is a crucial part of the eye. Our experienced team at Santamaria Eye Center works directly with you to diagnose retinal issues and treat them with precise care techniques that help preserve your vision.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a condition where increased blood sugar causes damage to the back of the eye. High blood sugar can kill healthy blood vessels. When the blood vessels regenerate, they do so abnormally, which can cause deterioration and leak into the membrane under the retina.

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is more commonly diagnosed in people over the age of 50. The macula is the part of the retina responsible for central vision. The macula can deteriorate over time, causing blood vessel leakages that can lead to blurry vision and blind spots in the central visual field.

Laser & Injection Treatments

Laser and injection treatments are a type of eye surgery that helps us treat macular degeneration. Laser treatments create scar tissue at the back of the retina, which seals blood vessels and can slow down macular degeneration. Injection treatments contain a protein that prevents your body from generating more blood vessels that can leak due to macular degeneration.

What is the Function of the Retina?

Your retina is an essential part of your eye. This light-sensitive tissue receives information from the front of the eye and relays it to the optic nerve. The retina has unique cells that capture light information to convert it into electrical and chemical signals, which your brain interprets as visual information.

What Are Symptoms of Retinal Damage?

Seeing floating objects in your visual field, called floaters, is often a notable sign of retinal damage. Flashes, which are sudden bursts of light, are also signs of retinal damage and could signify a detached retina, which is an emergency.

How Do You Test for Retinal Damage?

We test for retinal damage using innovative technology that allows us to get a complete picture of the back of your eye. In conjunction with images of your retina and its blood cells, we administer tests to determine your visual field and test for diminished central vision. Damaged central vision could be a sign of macular degeneration.

Is Retinal Damage Permanent?

If not treated promptly and properly, permanent vision loss can occur from retinal damage. If diagnosed early, we can create a comprehensive treatment plan to preserve your vision.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Dr. Santamaria was very patient and comforting during the entire process. I was reassured multiple times that my eyes were healthy enough for LASIK. During the procedure, he and his assistant made sure I was comfortable and made the process painless. I have had no issues since the surgery and wouldn't think twice about recommending Dr. Santamaria!

Surgery was amazing. Colors are bright and vivid. Everything is sharp. White is white, not off-white. Could not see like this with glasses I have worn for 67 years. Thank you, Dr. Santamaria and God bless you.

My eyes were getting worse every year. Being a diabetic, I was even more afraid. Even with the new glasses, I couldn't see signs or drive-up menus. I decided: ``The heck with these vision center places. I'm going for a good check up to Dr. Santamaria``. I have Medicare now, but thought he was only a surgeon. Praise God - it was the best move I made. He and his wonderful staff diagnosed a cataract in each eye. Why wasn't it seen before? I went every year for a check up. I now see better than I EVER did. I don't need my glasses. Driving is wonderful. I can read the scores on TV - It's a whole new world. I am so happy and so grateful to Dr. Santamaria and his staff! On top of their expertise, his staff is pleasant, knowledgeable and will answer any questions and concerns! Thank you again.
